Thomas maze runner3/22/2023 ![]() ![]() In the end, the novel suggests that none of the boys have truly lost their memories. Thomas wonders if, were he a criminal before arriving, would that mean that he is an essentially violent or immoral person. For example, early in the novel, Thomas mistakenly believes that the Glade is a prison and that all the Gladers are criminals. ![]() During his struggle to discover his identity, Thomas questions whether people are the sum total of their memories and past experiences or if we have essential natures that exist regardless of our experiences. As such, recovering his memories becomes one of his main goals. Without these memories, Thomas loses his sense of self. I think his impulsiveness is mostly a result from his extreme situation of not having much control in his environment, being constantly in danger and having nothing to rely on but his own experiences and intuitions about the Glade/Maze without his former memories to guide him.Įditor’s Note: I’m reading the book / saw the movie last weekend and personally see ISTP for Thomas but this is a good argument. In The Maze Runner, all the characters lose their memories before arriving in the Glade. NOTE: Although more impulsive than the traditional INTJ, Thomas does not demonstrate the Si or Fe of an INTP. Thomas is not satisfied unless he’s done everything possible in a situation. He doesn’t let people’s bad experiences prevent him from doing something. ![]() When necessary he focuses in on the present and is able take in key details about his environment that enable him to survive and help others in dangerous situations. His acute awareness of his frustration, confusion, anger and sadness help drive his actions.Įxtroverted Sensing: Thomas loves to be where the action is and takes big life and death risks to further his goals and save lives. Thomas demonstrates his affection of others through selfless acts of bravery and through his devotion to his mission, which is motivated in part by his altruistic belief that there is a better life for the Gladers outside of the Maze. Even though Ben attacked Thomas, when he is banished into the Maze, Thomas squeezes his eyes shut and is “surprised to feel tears trickling down his cheeks,” revealing his compassion. He is moved to tears by Chuck’s memory loss of his parents and his desire to be reunited with his mother and is deeply affected, vowing that when he finds a way out of the Maze he will search for Chuck’s mother to bring them together again. Introverted Feeling: Thomas feels deeply, but rarely expresses his feelings. He is eager to obtain information that will help him reach his goal and then is able to sift out the most relevant information to meet his needs. Thomas is able to determine that in order to move forward in their plan of escaping the Maze, he needs to stab himself with a Griever’s stinger, which will help restore some of his memories. Once he is out of the Maze he is eager to go back in and dissect the dead Griever to get more information. Thomas demonstrates his quick thinking again when he is able to get rid of the Griever chasing him by leading him through a closing section of the Maze and squishing it. Once trapped in the Maze, Thomas is able to keep an unconscious Alby alive by using the rope-like ivy to tie him high up ton he wall, effectively hiding him from the Grievers. Thomas is able to pick up small details and connect them to a larger picture with little evidence.Įxtroverted Thinking: Thomas is able to accomplish his goal of becoming a Runner even though it was impossible for a “Greenie” to be selected, because of his quick problem solving when he determines that the only way to save Minho and Alby is to run into the Maze as the doors are closing. He knows that he is different from the others and that this is dangerous, and so without fully understanding why, he will purposefully withhold or alter information to others that might draw suspicion and endanger his work and even his life. Thomas senses that things in the Glade are changing and knows that they must be proactive about solving the Maze in order to survive and that bad things will happen if they don’t. He has a hard time understanding and following the rules of the Glade when they conflict with his vision. Thomas is more interested in doing and trying new things that will help them leave the Glade rather than learning how to adjust and blend into the society. Immediately he is driven to become a Runner despite the threat of the Grievers and the admonitions of Alby and Newt because he knows that being a Runner is the only job that will help them reach their larger goal of escaping. Introverted Intuition: Thomas almost from the very beginning of entering the Glade instinctively knows that their purpose for being there is to solve the Maze and leave the Glade. ![]()
